Restored Portland stone facade in Central London

Stone and brick restoration in Central London

Central London is where stone and brick sit side by side: Portland stone commercial frontages, stucco terraces in Belgravia and Marylebone, and brick behind almost all of it.

Work in the centre is as much about access and sequencing as the masonry itself. Elevations are tight to the pavement, hours are restricted and most buildings are listed or in a conservation area, so scaffold design, licensing and neighbour notice matter from day one.

The masonry itself is usually a combination of soiled Portland stone, worn cornices and string courses, and pointing that has been repaired in cement over many decades. Stone is cleaned with low-pressure conservation systems, decayed sections indented or repaired in matched mortar, and joints rebuilt in lime. We work with contractors, surveyors and building owners across the postcodes below.

What we do here

Facade restoration in Central London

Whole-elevation programmes: cracked masonry stitched, mouldings and cornices reformed, defective render cut back and rebuilt, then finished so the front reads as one building again.

Repointing

Cement pointing raked out by hand and replaced in a lime mortar matched to the original mix, with the joint profile kept true to the building rather than smeared over.

Brick cleaning

Paint, graffiti, carbon and organic growth removed with the gentlest system that works, so the brick face and the mortar are left intact.

Stone cleaning

Portland and Bath stone frontages cleaned with low-pressure conservation systems - DOFF and TORC - rather than anything that opens up the surface.
