Stone restoration

Stone restoration

The success of any stone restoration project comes down to the craftsmanship of the masons. Ours have worked on some of London's most iconic buildings and monuments — analysing the substrate, matching repair materials to the original stone, and returning the stonework to its natural beauty.

Stone repair

Stonework facades and detailing are damaged for all sorts of reasons — most commonly weathering, poor maintenance, and the wrong materials or methods used in past restoration work.

When a facade is centuries old, the methodology matters as much as the craftsmanship. Before any remedial repair we analyse the condition of the substrate and identify the correct mortars and corrective approach for it.

Our stonemasons are specialists in the repair of all types of external stone — from cornices, corbels and sills through to intricate ornamental mouldings.

Replacement

Sometimes elements of stonework are simply too far gone. Where a section is beyond repair, we manufacture new stone to replace the damaged substrate outright.

We replace all types of stone, from whole sections such as a natural stone sill to missing ornamental fixings like corbels and dentils. Source materials are assessed carefully and replacements cast or hand-carved to appear as close to identical to the original as possible.

Stone cleaning

Dirt, pollution and algae accumulate on stone over time and take away from a building's appearance. Cleaning is also the step that lets us assess the true condition of the stone before any repair is specified.

Thirty years of cleaning work has taught us that analysis comes first — understanding the aggregates present and the right approach to removing them. Our operatives clean stone, marble, limestone, granite, brick, concrete and all other masonry surfaces using our specialist TORC and DOFF systems.

Masonry

Our masons are experts in the repair of damaged mouldings and details — corbels, cornices, columns and capitals. We rebuild stonework lost to moisture-rotted stone or rusted supporting steel.

However intricate the detail, our methods let us replicate the original aesthetic. Fixings that are beyond repair are cast and replaced in newly manufactured stone.
