Stucco & rendering

Stucco & rendering

Stucco and render have been used as a decorative coating since the Greek and Roman ages. Beautiful, but especially susceptible to weathering — most facades need attention every few decades. We repair, restore and reproduce external stucco and architectural detailing across London.

Stucco

Over time stucco is damaged by moisture within the wall, general weathering and gradual wear. Restoring it properly takes a company that has genuinely worked with the finish — section repairs where they are appropriate, and full re-rendering where they are not, including the restoration of mouldings and fixings.

We work end to end: assess the correct approach, carefully remove defective areas, specify the right mortars, re-stucco in multiple coats, and repaint in weathershield white to return the facade to its original look.

Rendering

Every couple of decades render wears down and needs renewing. Degraded render is the single most common cause of damp — moisture reaches the brickwork behind and quietly creates a far more costly repair later.

We handle total repair of all rendered surfaces: removal, preparation and rendering. Older cement-based mixes tend to fail in patches rather than evenly, so analysis comes first. Spot repairs are sometimes possible, though we usually advise a full renewal in a more breathable lime-based mix.

K-Rend

K-Rend

K-Rend is a modern alternative for facades that suit it. The difference is breathability — water vapour passes through the substrate rather than being trapped in the wall — and it comes pre-coloured, removing the need to paint afterwards.

It is not right for every building. We will talk it through against the fabric of your facade before recommending it.

As part of facade renovation we carry out remedial work at roof level: re-rendering parapet walls, removing and repairing fractured flaunching, and chimney restoration — repointing and repairing stacks, and fitting new cowls.

Render removal

We remove all types of render and stucco to bring a facade back to original brickwork. Some mixes bond hard to the brick beneath, so cleaning and brickwork restoration usually follow — and it is worth being clear from the outset that brickwork revealed after removal is often in poor condition.

Repointing is the last step in any render removal project. Our repointing team have worked on high-end residential and heritage buildings across London, in any chosen style and material.

A few photographs of the facade are usually enough for us to understand the scope.
