Richmond Royal Hospital

The TORIK system was used across the structure to clean the brick and stone facade. The controlled process removed algae, exposed aggregate and loose paint while allowing the operatives to respond to the condition of the historic fabric across different sections of the building.

Cleaning phases 1 and 2 first gave the team a clearer view of the underlying brickwork, pointing and architectural stone, helping the subsequent repair work to be targeted accurately rather than treated as a blanket intervention.

Defective brickwork was cut out selectively and repaired with materials chosen to sit sympathetically beside the original work. Open and failed joints were repointed in a flush style, using a mortar mix matched to the existing facade and the requirements of the listed-building specification.

Where localised movement had left sections of masonry vulnerable, HeliBars were installed to provide concealed structural reinforcement and secure the surrounding brickwork. The entrance pillars and decorative stone details were also restored, retaining the depth and character of the original architectural work.

At roof level, failed flaunching was removed from six separate chimney blocks. New sand-and-cement flaunching was then formed around the pots to create a secure, weather-shedding finish across each block.

Together, the roof-level work and facade repairs completed a broad restoration package spanning cleaning, conservation masonry, structural support and weather protection across this important Richmond building.
